Anthem One, a Different Concept for LED Lights

A new entrant to the field of LED lighting is Anthem One. The Milwaukee-based company was founded by inventor and film-maker, Justin Eugene Evans. Their cube-shaped luminaire, Anthem One, is based around a swappable Anthem Light Card. These solid-state wafers are coated with an array of micro LEDs and are available in several versions to meet the needs of different applications from filming to military surveillance.

LED lighting designs fall in two main categories: panel lights for area coverage and fresnels for directed light. The LED is becoming the technology of choice for filmmakers and videographers, replacing tungsten, fluorescent and HMI.

Tungsten suffers from inefficiency, with most of the electrical power being turned into heat. Both tungsten and HMI have limited lamp life. With tungsten, it can be a few hours if run a maximum voltage, with HMI it is around 500 hours. However, both these technologies have good spectral power density, which means they have very good colour rendering.

Fluorescent and LED lights use the excitation of light-emitting phosphors at the core of their technology, and originally had poor colour rendering. With careful choice of pump frequencies (the blue or ultra-violet radiation that excites the phosphors) and the characteristics of light-emitting phosphors, it is possible to achieve very satisfactory colour rendering.

The advantages of LEDs, with low power consumption and the very long life, with 50,000hrs being typical (nearly six years if run continuously), are now making them a compelling purchase for luminaires up to the equivalent of a 1kW HMI.

In a departure from the popular panel style, the Anthem One is a 140mm cube, which incorporates a silent active cooling system behind the interchangeable Light Card. The enclosure hides an array of neodymium magnets which allow users to snap units to steel beams or assemble multiple Anthem Ones into an array.  The cube weighs in at 3.5 kg and uses a separate power supply unit.

A variety of accessories mount to Anthem One via its hidden magnets, Kensington lock ports or 1⁄4-20 threaded bottom-socket. An optional lens kit includes two Fresnel lenses with a 60°, and 90° beam spread.

Other cards include an ultra-bright unit with a CRI of 72 for sectors where color rendering is not so important, an agricultural full -spectrum for greenhouses, and a military-grade infra-red for night-time surveillance applications.

The luminaire is operated by Anthem Power, a universal 110v/220v power supply, or Anthem Power Plus, a patent-pending, computer-controlled lithium-ion battery that reroutes voltage around misperforming cells to rebalance its output on-the-fly. DMX control is possible with an Elation Control dimmer pack.
